Foreign Office diplomats are said to be working hard to avert a minor incident over claims the name Michael Gove means penis in several African languages. Government insiders have said the fact the Education Secretary’s name is identical with the words that mean both ‘penis’ and ‘prick’ in several African dialects is unfortunate. However they admitted this is likely to cause a credibility issue when Gove visits or meets African diplomats or educational specialists. The mix-up has already led to several embarrassing incidents when Gove visited London schools and students of African origin were alleged to have been laughing and pointing at Michael Gove saying ‘prick’, cock’ and ‘penis’. Diplomatic sources have insisted only a fool would mistake Michael Gove for a penis.
